Chapter 150:
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
He felt his little hands were cold and frowned. “What’s the matter, are you cold?”
She shook her head, “No, just a little numb from sitting too long!”.
He sat up and checked her feet, and frowned again, “How come your feet are so cold too? You need to put on more clothes; it’s winter, don’t catch a cold!”. As he spoke, he tucked her feet into his thighs to warm them, and murmured as he moved, “I’ll help you warm up!”
He lay back down, put her small hands on his chest and covered himself with a blanket, then made a contented face. Listening to his steady breathing and feeling the comfort of his strong embrace, Sherry felt at ease, as if nothing in the world could soothe her like this method.
It was as if she had found a haven in which to put her life safe. As long as he was near, there was nothing to fear. The warmth came in waves and even warmed her heart as well. Sherry placed her delicate hand on William’s chest. Feeling the sturdy chest muscles, she couldn’t help but stroke him again and again. By the time she realized what she was doing, her hand was already on his waist.
William took a breath and Sherry pulled herself together. The only sound in the room was her agitated breathing. She pulled her hand away from his body, but as soon as she did, she felt a powerful pair of arms holding her tightly. Panicked, she looked up to meet William’s eyes, and fell into the deep gaze of his eyes….
Sherry’s face reddened in an instant, she didn’t know how to react to him. William looked at her deeply for a long time, and then asked, “Silly girl, I’m sorry I made you suffer; do you feel warmer now?”
Sherry couldn’t suppress her emotions; she didn’t dare raise her head either. All she could think of was to bury her head in his broad chest. She could hear his heart racing and pounding. When was the last time they’d cuddled like this?
Sherry nodded with her face flushed, “I feel so much better already, Thank you!”.
The joy she felt showed even in the corner of her eyes.
She was finally holding the love of her life in her arms again. He thought she would never forgive him. However, she was too generous and kind; she never complained and always took on more responsibility. How could he not fall in love with such a woman?
“Christmas is coming; when you’re ready to leave, shall we go on a trip somewhere?” He asked her in a low tone.
At the thought of traveling, her expression froze, “No! I don’t want to go!”.
William realized; he remembered the time he left her in Hokkaido, and waves of shame washed over him. She must have been deeply traumatized by that event.
Sherry then asked, “Is Ms. Mclean all right now?”
William shook his head and said, “Let’s not mention her again; she will never enter our world again. Whatever there was between her and me is now a thing of the past. Sherry, if I could, I would change the past, but I cannot. Trust me this time, okay?”
“Are you willing to cut her out of your life?” Sherry couldn’t believe her ears.
Thinking back, his strong sense of responsibility was one of the reasons she fell in love with him. If he was a cold, unfeeling man, she wouldn’t have truly loved him. Although it pained her to know that her lover was devoted to another woman, it also proved that he was a responsible man. If a man was unreliable, how could anyone love him? This must be the greedy side of humanity, to want a man to stay devoted to only one love, to want that same man to be responsible, and for that man to love only one person. It seems like a lot to ask for!
He brought his hand to his lips and kissed her slender fingers. The delicacy of her action was full of love and tenderness: “We have already lost too much because of him. Let us pray for our own happiness. She has nothing to do with us anymore; she has what she deserves. It wasn’t her ex-husband who tortured her, she did it to herself! She should be responsible for her own actions, not us. It’s all my fault, Sherry, I’m sorry!”
“You know everything?” Sherry was stunned, “So you even know about Reggie Kelly?”
“Of course! I asked a friend to help me investigate. It’s my fault, I shouldn’t have been so quick to judge. I’m sorry. You have to believe me, I’ll make it up to you, just wait and see, okay?” He was filled with guilt.
“So it wasn’t torture, after all; Reggie’s not that kind of person!” muttered Sherry silently and missed William’s promise completely.
She furrowed her eyebrows. It was unfair that Reggie was accused of abusing his wife. He said he would tell her the whole story between him and Lucille once Sherry recovered. It had been a long time since she had last spoken to him; how will he be now, she wondered. If it weren’t for Reggie, he didn’t know if she would still be alive now. Maybe she would have bled to death a long time ago. Come to think of it, he was her real savior!
Hearing her mutter to herself, William felt a slight bitterness, “Sherry, Reggie…”
Sherry looked at William’s hesitation and asked, “What’s wrong?”
“Stay away from him from now on; he’s definitely up to something!” William felt uncomfortable every time he remembered that Reggie had tried to separate them.
He still didn’t have the recognition of Sherry’s father; if another love rival appeared now, he would be in a difficult situation.
“Why, what’s he up to?” asked Sherry as she rested in his arms.
Being laid on his sturdy, broad shoulders made her feel at ease and happy again.
“He likes you, don’t I!” William turned to embrace Sherry and gently kissed her lips, “You’re all mine.”
He realized he was getting old; he was already thirty, So he didn’t need another rival to steal his love! William had already checked out Reggie; a multiracial son of a wealthy family with his own business in France.
Reggie was certainly a talented young man. What puzzled William was the fact that Reggie married and then divorced Lucille. Sources say that, at the time of their marriage, the two were happily in love. Then, two years later, they suddenly divorced for no apparent reason.
“How can that be?” Sherry laughed at the absurd suggestion, “Reggie doesn’t like me; he still loves Miss Mclean. You didn’t see how worried he was that day when he found out Miss Mclean was missing! I’m sure he loves her very much.” As she spoke, a thought crossed Sherry’s mind. She looked at William with her expression deadpan, “By the way, Miss Mclean loves you too much. Even when you were together, even when you were having sex, she kept calling your name. I think this may be the reason they got divorced. Think about it, how could a man put up with his wife calling another man’s name during sex? William Rowland, you devil.” Sherry defended Reggie’s good name from the bottom of her heart; what kind of man would put up with this kind of humiliation? She really felt sorry for Reggie.
William was even more speechless when he heard this; how was this possible?
“Sherry, even jokes have a limit; let’s not talk about Lucille ever again, okay? And don’t ever see Reggie again, okay?”
“Why can’t I meet him?” Sherry saw the tension in William’s expression. “What are you afraid of? If you’re not guilty of anything wrong, what’s there to be afraid of? He’s a friend, so I’ll meet him when I want to.”
“Darling, you’re the only one for me!” He laughed a silly laugh, then lowered his head to kiss her lips. “Don’t ever meet him again, I won’t let you!”
“Don’t you ever kiss me again or I’ll have Mr. Sutton throw you out!” Just as William was getting excited, Sherry suddenly shouted that and extinguished his flame.
She looked at his dazed and confused attitude, she couldn’t help but laugh. William let out a low growl, then lay down on top of her in a defeated manner, panting as he reluctantly said, “Darling, it took everything I had to get up here; it wasn’t easy to evade all those guards either. Just promise me you won’t see Reggie again, okay?” As he spoke, the door lock turned, and the door flew open the next second.
Mr. Sutton had his face unhinged and a pistol at the door. He roared, “William Rowland, how dare you come into my house! I’ll make you taste my bullet.”
“Ah!” Sherry let out a scream, broke away from William and ducked to the side. Her face was red as a tomato, why had she come in? William was too tired to roll his eyes, but he didn’t want to get on the old man’s bad side either.
He began, “Father-in-law, let Sherry and I have a nice little chat, okay? Sherry has forgiven me, so… Could you let bygones be bygones too?”
“Down!” Mr. Sutton pointed his gun at William and motioned for him to get off the bed. “How dare you get into my daughter’s bed! I’m going to kill you!”.
“No! Son-in-law!” William yelled nervously and glanced at Sherry for help, but she feigned ignorance.
“I don’t know when he came in, I was sleeping!” Sherry played along with the situation.
It was William’s fault for being so stingy and telling her she couldn’t befriend Reggie. She was going to resist him, so he shouldn’t give in. Seeing Sherry behave as if none of that bothered him, William’s eyebrows furrowed.
“Sherry, don’t do this; I was wrong, you have to save me!”
“You! Get out!” Lord Sutton gestured to William.
William ran out of options and glanced at Sherry again.
“Go away now, I’m going to sleep – don’t wake the children!” Sherry said, “Mr. Sutton, once you are gone, you should rest too, don’t stay up late!”
Mr. Sutton felt desperate, could she call him ‘Dad’ even once? Why did she always address him as ‘Mr. Sutton’? It didn’t feel right.
William rolled his eyes, got off the bed and started to put on his shoes. He buttoned his shirt and headed for the door.
“Father-in-law, can we talk?”
“What is there to talk about? You hurt my daughter, I have nothing to say to you!”
“But I have a plan to make your wish come true!” At this point, William’s business acumen began to shine through.
Sherry was puzzled by William’s confidence and frowned. She looked at William, and finally asked, “What are you trying to do?”
William said nothing but winked at her. She watched as a smile began to creep onto his handsome face.
“Sherry, tell your father that you have already forgiven me, and that I am free to come and go as I please. I promise I’ll take good care of you.” said William quietly; he obviously didn’t realize how underhanded and despicable he sounded.
“Trying to negotiate terms with my daughter? You’re looking for a death wish! Sherry, ignore him, I’ll throw him out!” bellowed Mr. Sutton as he dragged William by the collar of his shirt.
